Former California Athlete-scholars busted

UC Berkeley, California grads are from San Diego, California Two former San Diego, California high school athlete-scholars were arrested last week in Oakland, California and face charges of felony drug sales, possession and manufacturing, California authorities said.
Jory Wolf, 24, and Brian Friedman, 23, described by California police as longtime high school friends and recent graduates of the University of California Berkeley, were arrested July 24 after officers acted on an anonymous tip, said Oakland, California police Officer Karla Rush.

The two, who posted $20,000 bail each, have a California court hearing scheduled for Aug. 28, she said.

Three other people who lived with Wolf and Friedman are being sought, Rush said.

According to reports in The San Diego, California Union-Tribune, Wolf went to Torrey Pines High School, California where he lettered in baseball in 1997 and was named a scholar-athlete with a 4.11 GPA.

Friedman attended La Jolla Country Day school in California and lettered in basketball in 1998. He, too, was a scholar-athlete, with a 3.46 GPA. To qualify, a varsity athlete must maintain a 3.0 GPA or better.

The tipster told California police the home in the Oakland Hills, California was being used to grow large amounts of marijuana, Rush said. She contacted the trash company and made arrangements to have the home's garbage dumped into a special bag for review.

After finding evidence of drug sales, California officers obtained a search warrant July 24 and that afternoon broke down the door to the home.

Only Wolf and his girlfriend were there, Rush said. Friedman was arrested when he returned home.

California Officers found marijuana in all stages of growth and sales preparation, she said. They also confiscated pay-off books, scales, plastic bags of pot and packaged bundles, Rush said. They estimated the drug's worth at $250,000.

"Jory gave a statement that he used it for personal use because he had cut his hand in March," Rush said.
