California Sheriff's department wants to sell planeThe Tulare County, California Sheriff's Department received a $1.8 million boost in its ongoing fight against methamphetamine manufacturers.
The federal grant funds a detectives unit, a sergeant, and paid for a 1973 Cessna 337 Skymaster, to be used as a surveillance aircraft.
"It's faster and has much more safety margin than plane we've been using," said Capt. David Williams, who pilots the aircraft. "It's a tremendous upgrade and asset."
Equipped with video and infrared equipment, the plane will be used for surveillance, tracking suspects at night, transporting officers and serving search warrants out of state.
"With California being the major supplier of meth to the rest of the states, we have to be able to move quickly before dealers get rid of the evidence," Williams said. "This aircraft enables us to do that."
The acquisition of the new plane will allow the sheriff's department to sell its old one.
The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday will be asked to approve the sale of the department's 1968 Cessna 206 to the Merced County Sheriff's Department for $65,000.
The Tulare County, California Sheriff's department acquired the plane in 1985.
"An aircraft used to transport illegal drugs can be seized by any agency under federal asset forfeiture laws and then becomes available for law enforcement use," Williams said. "This aircraft was first offered to federal and state agencies, who didn't want it, and then we asked to have it. It was given to us free of charge."
Other items on Tuesday's agenda include a presentation by Art Gaffrey, forest supervisor, who will discuss the Sierra Nevada Forest Plan amendment draft supplemental environmental impact statement; and requests from Janet Hogan, county administrative officer, to consider, modify and approve the responses to the 2002-2003 Grand Jury's Report regarding the Millennium Fund and the health care crisis in Tulare County, California.
