California drunk driving suspect kills motoristAn 84-year-old Fresno, California man died after an apparent drunken driver ran the elderly man off a road and into a power pole just west of Selma on Monday, the California Highway Patrol reported.
California officers arrested a 33-year-old Selma, California man on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol when causing the crash, said California Highway Patrol spokesman Axel Reyes.
Neither the victim or the suspect has been identified.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the following occurred beginning about 9:45 a.m. on Nebraska Avenue just east of Highland Avenue:
The 33-year-old man was speeding eastbound when he smashed his Mitsubishi Montero into the rear of a GMC Sierra pickup truck being driven by the 84-year-old man.
The older man lost control collided with a power pole, shearing off the wooden pole at its base. The pole landed on top the man’s pickup, which caught fire. The 84-year-old man died at the scene.
The 33-year-old suspect continued to drive for several yards before he, too, lost control and spun off the road and into a power pole, which was also sheared off at its base.
The man, who was not injured, ran for just a short distance.
Reyes said the two men did not know each other.
