Firefighter arrested in steroid bust in California

A Sacramento, California firefighter whose muscular physique, winning smile -- and a striptease -- won him a spot on the cover of a 2004 fund-raising calendar is under suspicion for selling steroids.

Michael Jason Roper, 28, who has worked for the Sacramento, California Fire Department for two years, is featured on the cover and the September page of "Feel the Heat," a calendar being sold locally to raise money for the Firefighters Burn Institute.

Roper and his girlfriend, Tonya Sue Conzatti, 37, were arrested Oct. 24 at their Roseville, California home after a two-month undercover investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Both face charges of possession with the intent to distribute anabolic steroids, said Gordon Taylor, agent in charge of the Sacramento, California DEA office.

"Its unfortunate that someone would risk their whole career to get an edge or risk their own appearance," Taylor said. "But I don't think this should reflect negatively on the Sacramento, California Fire Department, and I'm hoping this is an aberration in the fire service."

Sacramento, California fire spokesman Capt. David Whitt said that Roper is currently on paid administrative leave. Neither the department nor the city would comment on the case.

Roper and Conzatti, both of whom are out on bail, could not be reached for comment.

Taylor said agents searched the couple's home on the 7100 block of Claremont Circle, where they found more than a dozen different types of testosterone-based steroids made in Mexico. They also found $2,700 in cash, connected to the drug sales, Taylor said, and an unknown liquid substance that tested field positive for gamma hydroxybutyrate, or GHB.

"GHB is popular among bodybuilders," Taylor said. "They believe that there is something in it that is muscle building."

GHB is also commonly referred to as a date-rape drug because some assailants have used it to drug their victims. It is also frequently used in the dance club scene where partygoers combine the liquid with alcohol or the drug Ecstasy.

Brian Rice, president of the Sacramento, California Area Firefighters Local 522, which oversees the Firefighters Burn Institute, said Roper's arrest is "disappointing."

But the Firefighters Burn Institute has decided, for the moment, to keep selling the money-making calendars, he said.

The calendar and its associated events raise more than $100,000 annually for burn treatment, education and survivor counseling.

However, Rice said calendar planners have been rethinking the way in which they choose candidates. Each year a panel of community members judges a talent show in which firefighters compete to be in the calendar.

Roper and fellow firefighter paramedic Jeff Rempfer did a parody of "Saturday Night Live" characters Hans and Franz, two artificially inflated bodybuilders who are known for the phrase, "Pump you up."

At the end of the skit, both firefighters did a striptease to the wild applause of the mostly female audience.

"Even before this (Roper's arrest) we've had discussions on the calendar and its future," Rice said. "It's a terrific fund-raiser, but the competition that we held in the past is not going to be a part of that. We are looking at ways to still have a calendar but it will probably look very different in the future."
